The Wild Kingdom

It’s been WAY TOO LONG since I’ve written on this blog!  It has been a busy few months but, during this time, we got to enjoy the experience of a lifetime… we went on a SAFARI… an incredible and amazing experience in a million different ways!  Being a huge animal lover, I’ve dreamed of going on a safari for years.  So when an opportunity came along and friends of ours asked us to go with them, we immediately said YES and began to plan!

There is so much I could share about it… so many stories.  The very first sighting was less than 1/2 mile  from our tent camp as we were leaving on the first morning out.  We saw a large pond and around it were families of elephants, zebra, gazelles, giraffes, and wildebeest… all enjoying the water together.  We watched them only a few yards away and I was so awestruck I forgot to take a single photo!  And after that, the animal  encounters came in hundreds of different ways with every day a new experience and adventure.  It was incredible how close we were able to observe the wildlife… many times right next to our safari vehicle.  We heard the lions breathe, the sound of the elephants ears when they flapped in the air, and the voices of wildebeests and zebra.  At times we were so close it seemed l could reach out and touch them.

Staying in the middle of the Serengeti in tent camps, we were able to see and experience the animals outside of our tents… hearing the hoofbeats from a herd of visiting zebra and even the roar of a lion.  But one of my favorite memories is walking out of the breakfast tent at sunrise heading toward the safari vehicle for the day’s adventure.  As I walked, I noticed a magnificent giraffe gracefully coming toward me… no fear of me and I having of no fear of him.  A few feet away from each other, he turned to nibble on a tree.   Against a backdrop of the sunrise, a memory I will never forget.

After experiencing the Wild Kingdom in the Serengeti, I found myself anxious to see the wildlife in the paradise of home in Costa Rica.  The tropical rainforest brings it’s own special wildlife that I get to enjoy every single day.  Coming home, we were welcomed by the sounds of parrots flocking to the trees near our patio.  We discovered a new colorful caterpillar crawling on our plants that we’d never seen before, and it was about 5″ long!  And we noticed the Basilisk lizards (also called the Jesus Lizard since it walks on water) who live near our pool had a new baby lizard while we were gone.  So we’re back to life in the jungle… waking up to howler monkeys in the morning and going to bed hearing the tree frogs croak their songs at night.  And as the saying goes…. there’s no place like home.
